- Rose water is an ancient herbal water with healing properties that can soothe skin irritation, unclog pores and hydrate dry skin.
- Rose water has been used since the Middle Ages for its antibacterial and anti-inflammatory qualities, and in recent years, it’s made its way into the beauty industry in the form of facial sprays and skincare products.
Beauty products that promise miracles or shockingly easy solutions often seem too good to be true — especially in a culture obsessed with skincare, where selfies have now extended to show what’s inside people’s medicine cabinets (or in some cases, skincare mini-fridges).
One recent skincare craze, however, is more than a fad. Rose water, which is readily available at nearly any drugstore or beauty supplier, is a semi-recent product trend that has a rich history and health data to back it up.
What is rose water?
Rose water is exactly what it sounds like; It’s a fragrant water made by distilling rose petals with steam, and it’s been used for thousands of years. Rose water is believed to have originated in Persia during the Middle Ages, when the ancient water was used for its antibacterial and healing properties.
Why use it?
1. Reduce skin irritation and redness
Rose water — specifically the plant it’s made from, called Rosa damascena — contains anti-inflammatory properties that may help soothe skin conditions like eczema or rosacea.
2. Tone and unclog pores
Rose water has astringent qualities, which means it cleans out pores and retracts dirt and oil from the skin. This is why rose water is commonly used as a facial toner post-cleansing. It helps the skin cells to stay sealed, which keeps excess dirt out of pores.
3. It’s a natural moisturizer
In addition to soothing redness and unclogging pores, rose water may also be a major dry skin solution. To soak up its hydrating properties, soak a cotton pad in rose water and place the pad under your eyes or on dry areas of your face.
